So the House passed the Waxman-Markey climate-change bill. In political terms, it was a remarkable achievement. But 212 representatives voted no. Most rejected the bill because they rejected the whole notion that we have to do something about greenhouse gases. And as I watched the deniers make their arguments, I couldn’t help thinking that I was watching a form of treason — treason against the planet.
It would be laughable anywhere else. But, so everyone says, the Waxman-Markey bill which is likely to be passed in Congress today or tomorrow, is the best we can expect — from America, until the corruption of public life is addressed.
David Roberts argues that it appears right now a small step on climate change is all we can take. But did it have to be so? And will it always, especially when we don't have time for only small steps if we are to avert a climate crisis?
